It’s the most wonderful time of the year and the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter is making sure that our staff, volunteers, animals and the public don’t miss out on an extra-special way to celebrate the holidays. Our staff and volunteers have worked hard to decorate the shelter with handmade Christmas stockings for our animals, as well as glowing Christmas light inside and outside on our beautiful Tree of Hope, in memory of pets loved and lost.

This past weekend, we kicked off our “Aisle of Misfit Toys” adoption promotion. Until Dec. 24, all dogs are available for adoption for $50 and cats are available for adoption for $20.

This promotion comes at an important time of the year, and not just because of the holidays. While intake has finally slowed a bit – not much, and certainly much later than we expected – we have more shelter animals waiting and waiting for homes than we have ever had before. As we move closer and closer to reaching our 90 percent live release rate (in fact, we are already there for our dogs), we are finding ourselves caring for animals for longer and longer amounts of time. Sometimes there is a reason – a quirk or an issue that requires a special type of home – but oftentimes some animals are just overlooked. Whatever the reason, it is now the season for them to find their adoptive homes!

We wish it were just as simple for our misfits for go home – how we wish that Santa would stop by the shelter on Christmas Even night. Instead of presents in his sack, he would have leashes and collars and carriers. He would load up each pet and safely deliver them to the perfect home … the homes we know are out there. While I am a faithful believer in Christmas magic, we know that we need to help our shelter pets find their home.

You can help! If you are thinking of adoption, why not make it a Christmas adoption? While you will want to be cautious if you have a lot going on at home (it’s important not to push too much on a new pet at once), Christmas can be the perfect time to add a pet, as you may have some time off to help the dog or cat adjust. In addition, there is no greater Christmas miracle that our animals could ask for.

If you aren’t prepared to adopt, please help us get the word out. Use social media to share our Misfit Promotion so that everyone knows if you are looking to make a cat or dog’s dream come true, South Jersey Regional Animals Shelter is where you need to go. At the shelter you will meet wonderful misfits such as Harden, a handsome and young American Bulldog looking for a fun-loving owner who will help him learn his manners. You also can check out beautiful Luna, a cat who has been waiting for months to find a home of her own – for no good reason at all! May I also suggest Milo Penn, a handsome young brindle mixed breed; or Cooper, a very debonair, orange-and-white tabby?

There are only a few days left to take advantage of this special opportunity (and we have special hours on Christmas Eve – we’re open noon to 2 p.m.), so make sure to check “pet adoption” off your holiday to-do list and visit us soon!
