It’s been eight years since I’ve had a puppy of my own and I had thought, after having gotten two at one time back then, that adopting adult dogs was the way to go from there on out! I have also fostered dozens of pups over that eight-year period, which you would think, would satisfy any yearning for puppy parenthood.
So here I am, a puppy parent once again … it was one of the best decisions of my life.
Jinx just turned 5 months old and I’ve found that it’s been a little more challenging training a puppy during the winter. I travel with my dogs all the time so it’s important that they learn how to respond appropriately to car rides, staying in unfamiliar places, walking in crowds, eating at outdoor restaurants and all the other stimuli they must deal with when away from home. I’m a firm believer in exposing pets to new experiences from the moment
Finally, the opportunity presented itself and we traveled up to New Hope, Pennsylvania, last week for a couple days of trail walking and shopping in the village. New Hope is a very dog friendly town so we got to practice his heeling and crowd exposure as we walked the narrow sidewalks in town. He also visited several of the shops as he was welcome everywhere from the garden shop to the art gallery. He was fabulous! A little unsure of himself at first, but it turned out to be a positive experience for him and he gained confidence as he went along. Of course the shopkeepers bearing treats were a huge help!
