Spring is finally here and with the longer days and warm weather comes the first of the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter events for 2022, the annual Step for a Pet walkathon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24 at Parvin State Park in Pittsgrove.

We’ve not been able to hold an event since the start of the pandemic. So, it’s an understatement to say that staff and volunteers are very excited for our first in person event in more than two years!

Last week I held a volunteer meeting to talk about the pet walk and other upcoming events so that we could get the wheels in motion. I didn’t expect to be so overjoyed simply by an in-person meeting with many of our wonderful volunteers. It was truly nice to finally chat with them in person and see their smiling faces. Some of them I hadn’t seen in quite some time!

This year will mark the SJRAS’s 28th Step for a Pet event! This event has consistently been one of our biggest and most anticipated fundraisers each year bringing out more than 500 people and 300 pets, many of those pets being shelter alumni, who we’re always so happy to see!

If you are interested in supporting SJRAS by getting involved with Step for a Pet, there are several ways to help! We are seeking T-shirt, break station and watering hole sponsors; donations of gift cards, basket and raffle items; as well as vendors.

For our walkers, if you’re the competitive type and want to get busy fundraising for your walk, it is easier than ever this year with our online fundraising tools. As a team or individually, you can create your own fundraising page, shareable online to all your friends and family.

Visit southjerseyregionalanimalshelter.org to create your page or for more information on sponsorship and event opportunities.

Other events this year will include:

  • Plant bake and yard sale, May 7.
  • Monthly, spring through fall, vaccine clinics, starting May 14.
  • Volunteer led dog washes throughout the summer, dates tbd.

The SJRAS will also continue to help the community through our pet food drives and community initiatives.

Details of upcoming events will be announced on the SJRAS website and social media pages.
